The Johnstons were saved at Lincoln Land Baptist Church in Springfield, IL. Their Pastor at that time was Pastor Darwyne VanWye. Bro. Bob was saved on April 11, 1982, and his wife Mary, was saved on May 30, 1982. They served faithfully there until God called them into full time ministry. God called Bro. Johnston into full-time ministry in the Fall of 1983 about one year after they were saved. They enrolled in Fellowship Baptist College in East Peoria, IL in the Fall of 1983 and graduated with a degree in Missions in May of 1986. Several years later, they decided to further their education through correspondence, and Mary received a double Bachelors degree in Missions and Elementary Education from both Grace Baptist Institute in Green Castle, MO and Sauk Village Baptist Bible College, in Sauk Village, IL. Bro. Bob, received a double Bachelors and a double Masters degree in Missions and Secondary Education from both Grace Independent Baptist Bible College in Green Castle, MO and Sauk Village Baptist Bible College in Sauk Village, IL. After graduating from Fellowship Baptist Bible College in May of 1986, Bro. Johnston went to Grace Baptist Church in Green Castle, MO and served as Pastor Earl Baker’s associate for 2 ½ years in a brand new church just starting. He continued to pray that God would reveal to him what mission field He wanted him to go to, as God had not yet revealed to him where He wanted him to go. Bro. Bob was ordained on May 26, 1988. In February of 1988, Bro. Johnston went on a 10 day missions trip to Haiti, West Indies with his Pastor, (Earl Baker) and 5 other Pastors. It was during this trip that God revealed to Bro. Johnston where He wanted him to go and to preach the gospel. But, on the plane on the way back home to the United States he told God that he was not going to tell his wife Mary that God had called him to the Haitian people as he already knew that she did not want to go there. He told God that if He wanted him to be a missionary in Haiti, that He would have to also speak to his wife’s heart about Haiti. And again, we serve a great God who deals with the hearts of people who are sensitive to His will for their lives. About 2 weeks after they returned from the trip, Bro. Johnston and his Pastor had developed the slides of the trip and they had a Haiti Sunday and showed the slides and gave testimonies, but again, Bro. Johnston did not say anything about God calling him to the Mission Field of Haiti. They went home that afternoon and his wife Mary was taking a much longer time preparing lunch that day, so Bro. Bob went out to the kitchen to see if he could help her and he found her crying. He asked her what was wrong and she began to explain that she was all mixed up because the Lord was really speaking to her heart about the Haitian people and she did not understand why He hasn’t spoken to her husband first. When she told him that, he started jumping up and down and with much joy explained to her that God had already called him to the Haitian people and what he had told God on the plane on the way home. Together they rejoiced at God’s call on their lives and in September of 1988, they sold everything they had, and started deputation to raise their support to go to the Mission Field of Haiti. They landed on the Mission Field full time in April of 1990. Their goals once they reached the field was to: Learn the Language Win Souls to Christ Plant Churches, and disciple Christians Train National Pastors Preserve the next generation by establishing Christian Schools Translate Biblical Materials into their own language Train them to go out and do the same thing They preached the gospel of Jesus Christ faithfully in the country of Haiti until 1996 at which time God also expanded their ministry to branch out into the Dominican Republic, also ministering to the Haitians there. They are now ministering to both countries, Haiti and the Dom. Rep. Between the 2 countries, there have been: 21 ministries started 4 Christian Schools 1 Bible Institute (Haiti) & 1 Bible College (Dom. Rep.) Many Biblical materials have been translated into Creole. -Because their ministries are so spread out, it has become too difficult for him to travel to each place to train the Nationals. This is why God laid it on their hearts to start the Bible Institute in the Dom. Rep. so that they could bring in Haitians from both countries to be able to get them trained in 3 years instead of the time that it had been taking him by traveling all over. Their first goal is for God to bring in the needed funds to finish the construction of the Bible Institute in the Dom. Rep., to be able to have 200 students on campus now, with a goal in the future to be able to handle 600 students. They now have 233 students just waiting to join as soon as this first phase is completed. -To train Haitian men as Pastors & Missionaries in the Bible Institute and send them out through the local churches in both Haiti and the Dom. Rep. to reach Haitians also living in other Countries. -To also train Dominican men who feel called to be Pastors and Missionaries, to reach the Spanish speaking people of the world. -To also train American men who feel called to Missions. What better training for a man who feels called to a Mission Field than to be trained right on a mission field and get first hand experience while also getting Biblical training. -To continue planting Churches in both Haiti and the Dom. Rep. -To continue until Jesus comes or takes him home. |
